The largest industry in Ukiah and in the rest of Mendocino County is agriculture. Ukiah's unusual climate and fertile soil are home to numerous wineries, grape vineyards, pear producers and wood products plants. However, in the past 10 years more and more small non-agricultural manufacturers, information firms and mail order businesses have started operations here. And, as the county seat, a large number of Ukiah residents are employed by government.
